The Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro was established on the 16 of November, 1676 by the Papal Bull of Pope Innocent XI "Romani Pontificis Pastoralis Sollicitudo". The Monument to Christ, the Redeemer was built by the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro, with the collaboration of Catholics, when the Cardinal Sebastião Leme da Silveira Cintra was the Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro.
   
The Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Resources - IBAMA was established on the 22 February 1989, upon the merging of four Brazilian entities that worked in the environmental area. It is a federal organ, in charge of the management of such issues, and of formulating, coordinating, carrying out and enforcing the National Environmental Policy and the preservation, conservation, rational utilization, supervision, control and of the fostering natural renewable resources. Together with the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, IBAMA is in charge of the administration of the Tijuca National Park (that has in the Society of Friends of the Park its main sponsor), where the monument to Christ, the Redeemer is situated.
   
The Roberto Marinho Foundation is a non-profit institution, established 1977, having as mission to contribute with the quest for solutions to educational problems of Brazil. Its initiatives are focussed on projects of Tele-learning, preservation of the Brazilian historical and cultural heritage, and on respect and protection to the environment.
   

   
According to the World President of Otis, Stephen Page, "the Gen2, having no engine room and with environmental advantages, is the perfect elevator for this fantastic Brazilian project. The selection of Otis equipment by the Roberto Marinho Foundation constitutes the recognition of our worldwide leadership in the industry of conveyance of persons". Established 1853, Otis is present in the most important monuments of the world - such as the Eiffel Tower- employing about 62 thousand people and is part of the US group United Technologies Corporation.
   
Using two techniques of hillside containment, through stayed concrete screens (reinforced concrete, with steel stays) and buttresses (sequential columns of concrete), the Geotechnical Institute Foundation of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro (Geo-Rio), an organ of the Municipal Secretariat of Works, began the hill containment of the Corcovado, last September.

Such interventions shall enable the construction of two large concrete panels, with an area of about 60 square meters, in which cavities of approximately 20 meter height will be opened, and were the towers for the panoramic elevators will be fitted. It is expected that the works by Geo-Rio will be concluded in April 2002.

   
The Corcovado Railroad Train - inseparable from the Christ the Redeemer monument as a partner since beginning of the construction - actively supports the works of this project. Reforms to adequate and modernize its stations and the creation of a Cultural Space for preserving the memory of the monument are some of its actions of higher relevance.

More than 400 thousand people a year make this unforgettable trip to the top of the Corcovado Mountain, from where it is possible to enjoy the most beautiful landscapes of the city and to closely see the beauties of the Tijuca National Park. The trains are non-polluting and part of the revenue form its fares is directed towards environmental and conservationist actions in the Mata Atlântica.

The oldest institution of preservation in Latin America, the Brazilian Institute of the National Historic and Artistic Heritage - IPHAN - a federal organ linked to the Ministry of Culture - is in charge of what is most expressive in the Brazilian cultural assets. Established 1937, IPHAN has Decree-law Nº 25 as its main instrument, which lays down norms on the federal listing of sites. The Institute is entrusted with the care of rural, civil and religious monuments, and of movable, immovable and archaeological property, besides historical, urban and landscaping complexes, some of them considered as Heritage of Mankind. IPHAN is further in charge of identifying protecting and fostering heritage, stimulating the valorization of the national memory for the benefit of future generations.
   
The Tijuca National Park was created in 1961, by federal decree, and in 1991, it was raised to the status of Biosphere Reserve. Having about 600 vegetal species, among that native from the Mata Atlântica and exotic ones, and 300 medium and small size animal species, the park features a remarkable historical past and numberless works of art of incalculable value. This year, the Tijuca National Park is applying at UNESCO for the title of Heritage of Mankind.

Within the Park, it is possible to find some of the most famous tourist points of Rio de Janeiro, such as the Vista Chinesa(The Chinese Pavilion) , the Mesa do Imperador, the Dona Marta Belvedere, the Paineiras, the Pedra Bonita, the Pedra da Gávea and the Parque Lage. But the belvedere at the Corcovado is the biggest attraction of the site. Known worldwide, it receives about 750 thousand visitors yearly and is the only area of the Tijuca National Park for which admission is charged.
